Aggregate Calculator: what the result means

Calculate the geometric volume of a defined aggregate layer from its footprint and depth. “Aggregate” is a supply category rather than one fixed product, so establish the grading and intended use before using any density or ordering conversion.

Where this calculation is useful

Use the result for separately specified drainage layers, general fill, pipe bedding or sub-base zones. Do not combine layers merely because a quotation calls each of them aggregate.

How to measure this project

Measure each zone to its designed boundary. Where a trench changes width or depth, divide it into reaches. For a tapered area, use separate rectangles or a measured plan area rather than multiplying the maximum length and width.

Product and terminology distinctions

Fine aggregate, coarse aggregate and graded base material are not interchangeable. Particle distribution and fines affect intended use and bulk behaviour.

Worked example

A drainage strip measures 7.2 m by 0.65 m and is 120 mm deep. Convert 120 mm to 0.12 m: 7.2 × 0.65 × 0.12 = 0.5616 m³. With a selected 8% allowance, add 0.044928 m³ for a displayed total of 0.606528 m³.

The example uses geometry only. It does not insert a density, package size, recommended depth or supplier tolerance.

How to discuss the result with a supplier

Ask for the product by its grading or specification, not simply “aggregate”. Confirm whether the quotation is by loose volume, mass or a named load. If mass is quoted, request bulk density for that exact supplied condition.

Limitations

This calculator cannot determine grading, strength, drainage performance or compaction. It does not convert compacted design volume to delivered loose quantity without a product-specific factor.

Why is no density preselected?

Aggregate grading, moisture and voids vary, so a defensible mass estimate needs the supplier value for the exact product.
