Mulch & Compost Calculators

Estimate loose organic material volumes for beds and borders.

Choose by material or task

Mulch & compost tools separate product and project intents so users can select the terminology that matches their specification or supplier. Volume is calculated from geometry; weight remains conditional on product-specific density.

Before using a calculator

Identify the product, measure the footprint, obtain the required layer depth from appropriate guidance and keep distinct layers separate. Confirm significant purchasing decisions with the supplier.

Important distinctions

Mulch is commonly treated as a surface layer; compost may be a measured amendment or planter component. Confirm product purpose before treating quantities as interchangeable.

Use calculator results as documented planning quantities. Confirm terminology, material state, supply units and significant orders with the supplier.

Category questions

Why are there several calculators?

Each route addresses a distinct material, project or conversion intent and provides context appropriate to that decision.

Are weight and packages automatic?

No. They require supplier density or package capacity entered by the user.

From measurement to supplier conversation

Start with a sketch and the intended layer or filled space. Use the category guidance to choose the most specific calculator, retain the visible breakdown, and describe the result using the same units as the quotation. Ask whether the offered quantity is loose, compacted, by mass or by a defined package.

If the project uses several products or layers, keep a separate result for each. Combining them can hide differences in product specification, density and ordering unit.
