Crusher Run Calculator: what the result means

Estimate crusher-run volume from a measured layer. Because crusher run is a regional term, verify grading and fines content before associating the result with a product or density.

Where this calculation is useful

Use it where the project or supplier explicitly specifies crusher run for a path, drive or sub-base.

How to measure this project

Measure the prepared course between restraints. Divide areas where thickness changes, and exclude drainage channels or structures that interrupt the layer.

Product and terminology distinctions

Crusher run commonly contains a range of particles and fines, but exact grading varies. It is not automatically identical to road base or crushed stone.

Worked example

A path is 11.5 m by 1.4 m, with two 0.6 m × 0.6 m drainage grates excluded. Net area is 16.1 − 0.72 = 15.38 m². At 80 mm, or 0.08 m, volume is 1.2304 m³.

The example uses geometry only. It does not insert a density, package size, recommended depth or supplier tolerance.

How to discuss the result with a supplier

Confirm the local product name, maximum particle size, fines proportion and whether the quote is mass or volume. Do not import a density from an unrelated crusher-run product.

Limitations

No strength, permeability, compaction outcome or suitability is guaranteed.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming the term is internationally standard
  • Including drains and service covers in the filled area
  • Using the same depth for base and surface layers

Practical planning checks

  • Obtain the actual grading description
  • Deduct interrupted areas
  • Confirm placement condition and sale unit

Crusher Run Calculator questions

Why does crusher-run terminology matter?

The same name can describe different gradings, which affects suitability and bulk properties.

Can I use a density found for another supplier?

Not safely. Use a value tied to the exact product and condition.
