Direct answer
Decorative Stone Calculator: what the result means
Estimate decorative-stone volume for a measured visible layer while avoiding unsupported coverage claims. Colour and trade names do not define density, particle size or package capacity.
Where this calculation is useful
Use the result for contained beds, borders and accent strips. Keep separate colours or products as separate calculations to support ordering and layout.
How to measure this project
Measure inside the final edging and subtract paving, planters and large specimen features. For repeating narrow strips, verify that widths are genuinely consistent before multiplying.
Product and terminology distinctions
Decorative stone is selected partly for appearance; product names may change between suppliers. It should not be assumed equivalent to engineered base stone.
Worked example
Four identical border panels each measure 2.2 m × 0.55 m. Total area is 4 × 1.21 = 4.84 m². At an entered 55 mm depth, or 0.055 m, volume is 0.2662 m³.
The example uses geometry only. It does not insert a density, package size, recommended depth or supplier tolerance.
How to discuss the result with a supplier
Record product code, nominal size, colour and package capacity. Batch appearance may matter, so quantity planning should remain tied to the exact quotation.
Limitations
The calculator cannot predict visual coverage, colour variation, migration, weed performance or suitability on slopes.
Common mistakes
- Using a colour name as the complete specification
- Failing to deduct paving and planters
- Assuming a photographed layer reveals depth
Practical planning checks
- Measure after edging layout is fixed
- Separate colours and particle sizes
- Confirm package capacity and batch considerations
Decorative Stone Calculator questions
Does one layer hide the ground completely?
That depends on particle size, substrate and placement; BulkMeasure does not invent a coverage guarantee.
Can I use a base-stone density?
No. Use density for the exact decorative product if mass is required.
