Fill Dirt Calculator: what the result means

Calculate the geometric volume of a defined fill zone. Earthworks require care because excavated bank volume, transported loose volume and compacted placed volume are different states.

Where this calculation is useful

Use the tool for simple level-raising zones or rectangular excavations where dimensions are known. Complex grading surfaces require survey or earthworks modelling.

How to measure this project

Divide the site by depth band. For a trench or excavation with changing cross-section, calculate reaches separately. Do not use an average depth unless it is supported by measurements.

Product and terminology distinctions

Fill dirt is not topsoil and may be governed by engineering or environmental requirements. Quantity alone does not establish acceptability.

Worked example

A level area of 9 m × 6 m has two depth bands: 30 m² at 0.20 m and 24 m² at 0.35 m. Volumes are 6.0 m³ and 8.4 m³, giving 14.4 m³ of placed geometric space.

The example uses geometry only. It does not insert a density, package size, recommended depth or supplier tolerance.

How to discuss the result with a supplier

Describe whether the requirement is placed volume, excavated volume or imported loose fill. Confirm suitability, testing, contamination status and conversion factors through the project process.

Limitations

The calculator does not model cut-and-fill balance, shrink/swell, compaction, slopes, stability or contamination.

Common mistakes

  • Treating bank, loose and compacted volumes as equal
  • Using one maximum depth across a graded site
  • Ordering fill without confirming acceptance criteria

Practical planning checks

  • Map depth bands or obtain survey quantities
  • State the material condition beside every volume
  • Confirm testing and suitability separately

Fill Dirt Calculator questions

Can this calculate cut and fill from levels?

Not from a full terrain surface. Use appropriate survey or civil-design tools for complex earthworks.

Does allowance account for shrink or swell?

No. Those require project- and material-specific evidence.
