Direct answer

Paver Base Calculator: what the result means

Estimate the geometric volume of a specified paver-base course below a patio, path or paved area. Calculate bedding material separately because it serves a different layer.

Where this calculation is useful

Use it for defined base courses beneath block paving, slabs or paths after the required build-up has been established.

How to measure this project

Use formation dimensions for the base, which may differ from the visible paving. Deduct foundations or chambers and separate steps or level changes.

Product and terminology distinctions

Paver base, bedding material and jointing material are separate functional layers even when supplied by the same merchant.

Worked example

A patio formation is 7.5 m × 4.0 m with a 1.2 m × 1.2 m planting opening. Net area is 30 − 1.44 = 28.56 m². At a specified 125 mm, or 0.125 m, volume is 3.57 m³.

The example uses geometry only. It does not insert a density, package size, recommended depth or supplier tolerance.

How to discuss the result with a supplier

Specify the approved base product and grading. Ask whether any supplier conversion addresses compacted finished volume or loose delivery and keep bedding sand off the base quantity.

Limitations

BulkMeasure cannot determine pavement design, loading capacity, drainage fall or compaction requirements.

Common mistakes

  • Adding bedding sand to the base result
  • Measuring only visible slab dimensions where base extends further
  • Using an unsupported loose-to-compacted factor

Practical planning checks

  • Confirm formation footprint
  • Separate base, bedding and joints
  • Record whether depth is compacted or loose

Paver Base Calculator questions

Does this include bedding sand?

No. Calculate the bedding layer separately using its own footprint and specified thickness.

Can allowance represent compaction?

No. A general allowance is not a product-specific compaction conversion.
