Direct answer

Sand Calculator: what the result means

Calculate the volume of a sand layer or filled space from measured dimensions. Select the correct sand separately: sharp, building, kiln-dried and specialist sands can serve different purposes.

Where this calculation is useful

The calculator supports measured bedding layers, defined fills, sandboxes and landscape work. It does not decide which sand is suitable for a construction detail.

How to measure this project

Measure contained dimensions after accounting for kerbs, slabs or permanent inserts. For a bedding layer, use the plan area and specified perpendicular thickness. Calculate joint-filling material separately from the bed.

Product and terminology distinctions

Bedding sand, jointing sand and general fill are different purchasing intents. A single volume calculation must not imply they are interchangeable.

Worked example

A rectangular prepared area is 6.4 m long, 2.8 m wide and has a specified 35 mm sand layer. Convert 35 mm to 0.035 m: 6.4 × 2.8 × 0.035 = 0.6272 m³.

The example uses geometry only. It does not insert a density, package size, recommended depth or supplier tolerance.

How to discuss the result with a supplier

Quote the exact sand description and ask whether it is sold by mass, loose volume or package. Moisture can affect bulk mass, so use a current supplier density only when a weight estimate is needed.

Limitations

BulkMeasure does not recommend layer thickness, account for moisture change or establish compaction. Obtain specification values for the actual system.

Common mistakes

  • Including slab volume in the sand-filled space
  • Confusing a bedding layer with joint-filling quantity
  • Applying a generic wet or dry sand density

Practical planning checks

  • Confirm the material role before measuring
  • Deduct permanent occupied volumes where material cannot go
  • Keep bed and joint calculations separate

Sand Calculator questions

Does moisture change the volume result?

The geometric space is unchanged, but moisture can affect bulk density and delivered mass.

Can this calculate paving joint sand?

Only from defensible joint geometry; do not reuse a bedding-area calculation for joints.
