Soil Volume Calculator: what the result means
Calculate the volume of a soil-filled space without assuming whether the product is topsoil, subsoil or a blend. Define the material requirement before ordering.
Where this calculation is useful
Use it for planters, lawns, borders and simple landscape earthworks. Separate zones by soil type and intended finished depth.
How to measure this project
For contained planters, use internal dimensions and deduct permanent drainage layers or inserts. Across open ground, split by depth and product specification.
Product and terminology distinctions
General soil, topsoil, subsoil and growing media have different purposes. A volume result does not select among them.
Worked example
Three identical internal planters measure 1.6 m × 0.7 m × 0.45 m. One planter holds 0.504 m³, so three hold 1.512 m³ before deducting any permanent internal components.
The example uses geometry only. It does not insert a density, package size, recommended depth or supplier tolerance.
How to discuss the result with a supplier
Ask for the exact soil grade or blend, sale unit and delivered condition. Use labelled package volume or supplier bulk density rather than a generic soil conversion.
Limitations
The calculator cannot assess soil quality, fertility, drainage, contamination or settlement.
