Direct answer

Stone Calculator: what the result means

Estimate the volume occupied by loose stone across a measured area. The result describes space, not the mass of a particular stone, and remains valid without assuming a product density.

Where this calculation is useful

Use it for loose stone in borders, drainage zones, paths or landscape layers where the footprint and planned depth are known.

How to measure this project

Follow the finished edging rather than the rough excavation. Split curved borders into short measured sections or use circles and triangles where they fit. Keep larger feature-stone zones separate from small graded-stone areas.

Product and terminology distinctions

Loose landscaping stone includes voids between particles. Its bulk density is not the density of a solid piece of stone.

Worked example

A circular stone bed has a diameter of 3.6 m and a depth of 60 mm. Its radius is 1.8 m and area is π × 1.8² = 10.178760 m². At 0.06 m depth, volume is 0.610726 m³ before allowance.

The example uses geometry only. It does not insert a density, package size, recommended depth or supplier tolerance.

How to discuss the result with a supplier

Suppliers may use stone, chippings, gravel or rock for different products. Record the nominal size, grading, finish and sale unit shown on the quotation. Use supplier package capacity for bag counts.

Limitations

The tool does not choose a suitable stone, assess drainage or predict how particles will settle. It also cannot infer coverage from a product photograph.

Common mistakes

  • Measuring to an unconfirmed future edging line
  • Using radius where the form requests diameter
  • Treating stone colour as a technical product specification

Practical planning checks

  • Confirm the actual bed outline after edging is set
  • Record different stone products separately
  • Check whether depth describes a loose or finished layer

Stone Calculator questions

Does stone size change calculated volume?

No. Geometry sets volume, but stone size can affect bulk density, settlement and appearance.

Can I calculate bags from a product name?

No. Enter the capacity printed for the actual bag or container.
