Estimate the geometric volume of topsoil needed to fill a measured planting area to a chosen depth. The calculator does not prescribe soil grade, composition or horticultural suitability.
Use separate results for new lawn areas, raised borders, reinstatement zones and planting beds when their depths or soil specifications differ.
Measure the usable internal planting footprint. Subtract paths, structures and large permanent features. For sloping ground or variable make-up, divide the area by depth band rather than using one maximum depth.
Topsoil is not automatically equivalent to subsoil, compost or a raised-bed blend. Product selection depends on the planting and project requirement.
An L-shaped border is split into rectangles of 5.0 m × 1.2 m and 2.4 m × 0.9 m. Their combined area is 6.0 + 2.16 = 8.16 m². At 180 mm, or 0.18 m, calculated volume is 1.4688 m³.
The example uses geometry only. It does not insert a density, package size, recommended depth or supplier tolerance.
Ask whether the product is screened, blended, certified or sold to a named specification. Clarify whether the quoted quantity is loose volume or mass and whether settlement is addressed separately.
