Cubic yards are a volume unit, not a weight. Use this calculator when dimensions or quotations are expressed in yards and keep length, area and volume units distinct. A material name is unnecessary until a weight estimate is requested.

Calculating cubic yards from dimensions

Cubic yards measure volume, not weight. Measure length, width and depth, convert each to yards, then multiply. A space 12 ft long, 6 ft wide and 9 in deep becomes 4 yd × 2 yd × 0.25 yd = 2 yd³. This result needs no material density.

Where cubic yards are used

This unit commonly appears in volume-led quotations and project notes. Keep the original dimensions beside the answer so a supplier can see whether the quantity describes a bed, trench, layer or container. If the quotation is by tons, obtain a product bulk density rather than treating yards as a mass.
