Direct answer
Landscape Rock Calculator: what the result means
Estimate the loose volume of landscape rock across a defined decorative area. Large particle sizes and irregular features make accurate boundary measurement especially important.
Where this calculation is useful
Use it for decorative beds, perimeter strips and landscape features. Keep different rock sizes, colours or zones separate when they will be purchased separately.
How to measure this project
Measure the actual area inside the edging. Deduct large specimen rocks, planters or structures. If a bed narrows, split it at the change rather than using a maximum width.
Product and terminology distinctions
Landscape rock is a visual-use category, not a defined engineering grading. Decorative names cannot supply density or coverage values.
Worked example
A border is 12 m long with two widths: 7 m at 0.75 m and 5 m at 1.10 m. Area is 5.25 + 5.50 = 10.75 m². At an entered 65 mm depth, or 0.065 m, volume is 0.69875 m³.
The example uses geometry only. It does not insert a density, package size, recommended depth or supplier tolerance.
How to discuss the result with a supplier
Use the supplier’s nominal size, colour and product code. Ask for the package or bulk-load unit and, for weight estimates, the relevant loose bulk density.
Limitations
The calculator does not assess weed control, edging, slope stability or whether a chosen rock is safe for an application.
Common mistakes
- Calculating beneath large permanent feature rocks
- Using the widest border dimension throughout
- Choosing quantity from a product image or colour name
Practical planning checks
- Confirm edging before final measurement
- Separate visually distinct products
- Review slope and containment outside the quantity calculation
Landscape Rock Calculator questions
Do larger rocks need a different formula?
The geometric formula is unchanged, but voids, settlement and density may differ.
Can I calculate coverage from a product photo?
No. Use measured geometry and supplier information for the actual product.
