Crushed Stone Calculator: what the result means
Estimate crushed-stone volume for a defined layer while keeping the geometric result separate from grading, compaction and mass assumptions.
Where this calculation is useful
Use separate results for drainage stone, sub-base, bedding or surface layers. A project may specify more than one crushed-stone grading.
How to measure this project
Measure the prepared formation for each layer, including changes in level or width. Enter the required layer thickness from the project specification and do not combine it with a separate bedding course.
Product and terminology distinctions
Crushed stone is angular and may be supplied in different gradings. It is not automatically the same as crusher run, road base or decorative stone.
Worked example
A patio base is 5.5 m by 4.2 m, but a 1.0 m by 0.8 m service chamber is excluded. Net area is 23.1 − 0.8 = 22.3 m². At 100 mm, or 0.10 m, base volume is 2.23 m³.
The example uses geometry only. It does not insert a density, package size, recommended depth or supplier tolerance.
How to discuss the result with a supplier
State the grading, fines content and whether the supplier quantity is loose or compacted. If the quotation is by mass, use only its product-specific bulk density.
Limitations
The tool does not determine structural capacity or convert compacted design volume into delivered loose volume without approved data.
